Sean Flemming - World Cross Country Team Questionnaire

These are the questions I'm asking all of the members of the junior-aged runners going to the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. They are just very general questions which will be used to introduce the readers to you. Have fun with any of the answers. Many of the runners reading this will be people who look up to you and your achievements so just remember to keep that in mind while you write this. That doesn't mean give the answers people want to hear but give answers that you think show a side of your personality without offending anyone too much. I look forward to reading everyone's responses and posting them on Trackie for all your fans to read.

1. When and why did you first decide to start running?
I first started when I was in gr.7. I was just running at school meets though. I got serious about track when I was in gr. 9, when I joined a track club. I found out that real running was a lot more complicated than what I had been doing. I didn't even know what a warm up was when I joined. I didn't really like running at first but once I ran a few races I knew it was for me.

2. When did you decide that you wanted to make the national team and go to the World XC Championships?
Well I didn't really think that I was going to make the team, because of my 48th finish the year before, until my coach told me I could do it. From then on that was what I focused on.

3. Is this the first time you've competed at a major international competition?
Yup. This year was only my 2nd time at a National competition.

4. What was the first thing that you thought/felt when you realized you made a national team and would be going to Japan?
At first I didn't know what was going on, but once I talked to my coach and realized what I had just done I was pretty pumped.

5. Aside from the race, what are you most looking forward to when you go to Japan?
I'm really looking forward to meeting the rest of the team. I'm excited about seeing what Japan is really like, especially the sushi.

6. What are your expectations for yourself and your team in Japan?
Since I've never been to world competition before I don't really know what to expect. I'd like to be top Canadian but we'll see what happens.

7. How has making the WXC team affected your training for this year as opposed to years when you weren't on the team?
Well I've never ran 7 days a week before so that is a really big change for me, and my mileage is much higher than past years. I do about 40 miles a week now. Which still isn't very much, but low mileage is a good thing.

8. Now that you're representing Canada, if there was one thing you could do to improve Canada what would it be?
I would like it if the trip wasn't self-funded, but not much I can do about that. Other than that Canada is perfect.

9. And finally, in old-school Trackie interview fashion here comes the curveball question which our team of sports psychologists (headed by Dr. Carey) will use to determine your mental preparedness for your race and help predict your placing. If you were a hotdog and you were starving, would you eat yourself?
Only if there was ketchup and mustard.

10. It's not really a question but here's your chances for your thank-you's, shout outs, hey to my hommies, etc or whatever you want to say.
I'd like to thank all my team mates from the QCS for helping get ready for this big race. Most of all I'd like to thank my coach for making this possible for me.

Thanks a lot for answering our questions, best of luck in Japan, have a safe and fun trip.
